#1, How to Use a Baitcasting Rod

The baitcasting rod was originally invented during the 17th century. And during the 1870’s it steadily became popular. If you want to fish freshwater fish such as northern pike, muskellunge, or large-mouthed bass, your best option is a baitcasting rod.  Learn more about how to use a baitcasting rod.

But you need to know how to operate a baitcasting rod. For your convenience, we have divided the user guideline into two parts.

These are:

  • 1. Knowing and understanding the parts and mechanism of a baitcasting rod
  • 2. The most straightforward way to use the baitcasting rod.

So, let’s start it.

#2, Understanding the Baitcasting Rod

The first thing you must ensure that you have bought the best baitcasting rod for your fishing. And you can do it only when you understand the internal mechanism of the fishing rod.

Baitcasting reel:

Like the spinning fishing reel, the baitcasting rod also has a reel. It is located at the top of the rod with a reel seat or an indented slot. It’s different from the spinning reel where the reel is positioned at the bottom.

The reel seat houses the spindle and also connects it with the rod.

Reel handle:

The reel handle of the baitcasting rod can be positioned on either side of the rod. The device is made with sturdy metal and is used to draw or release the line. Additionally, you will see a star-shaped device with the handle. This device is known as the drag knob.

You will use it to control the reel drag speed.

Spool:

The manufacturers mostly mount the spool in the middle of the reel. It is a cylinder positioned horizontally with holes in it. The fishing line is wrapped around the spool.

Fishing guide and tension knob:

A fishing guide is used to hold the fishing line in the spool during the time you feel it. The track appears like a tiny eyelet right on the fishing reel.

On the same side, you will also find a tension knob. It restricts the spool tuning once the fishing line will hit the water surface.

Braking system :

You will find the braking system in the opposite direction of the reel handle. You can use the braking system to prevent the spool from rotating too fast or too slow.

Thumb bar:

Below the spool, you will see the thumb ber. When you release the reel, the thumb bar disengages and lets the fishing line go. And when you retrieve the line, it closes down to keep the line intact.

#3, Using the Baitcasting Rod

Now that you know the parts of baitcasting reel and how they come into effect, it’s time to get some real taste of the rod.

Let’s start fishing.

  • 1. At first, you will have to reel the fishing line. When you start spinning, make sure that the lure or bait is at least 6-12 inches away from the rod tip. This distance is applicable even if you are using the attached bobber or sinker with the rod top.
  • 2. You should hold the rod in a way so that your thumbs remain on the spool. Your grip should rest just below the reel. Also, if you rest your thumb slightly angled, you should gain more control over the rod and line flow as you cast.
  • 3. If you want to release the reel using your wrist finger, you need to turn the rod. It will position the reel handle up towards you. Or you can use your other hand to cast the reel without turning it upside.
  • 4. Once you are ready with the perfect grip, you should press the release button of the baitcasting reel spool. For this, you need to press the thumb bar, aka release bar located right below the spindle. Once you press it, you will be able to cast your first fishing line.
  • 5. Now carefully and steadily bend your arm backward to form the right angle for the casting. The rod should pass in a moderately vertical way. This is a crucial fishing technique, and you will need time to perfect it.
  • 6. After the bending position, you will require to position the rod right in front of your eye level. The lure or bait weight will draw the fishing line towards the target in the water bodies.
  • 7. When you see the bait hitting your target, press down the spool. It will promptly stop the fishing line form further lining.

Now all’s done and start waiting until you feel the first fish bite.

A useful tip:

Baitcasting rod isn’t appropriate for the lightweight baits or lures, especially if it weighs less than a quarter ounce. So, if you want to use some lightweight lure, take a spin casting reel along with the baitcasting rod.

A baitcasting rod and reel are appropriate with the heavier lures only.
