How to Restring a Compound Bow

Well, there are two types of bow pressing tools that anyone can easily change the string. One is a portable one, and the other is a bench or a table bow press.

Here, you will find two ways of restringing with both types of bow presses. For both the beginners and professionals, it’s the best option to use a bow bending tool to restring. You can know the use of both and try with the one suitable for you.

Method-1: With a Bench or Table Bow Press

It is a T shaped bow pressing tool where you can keep your compound bow in a fixed position and work with strings with much comfort and safe measurements.
Steps to restring with the bench or a table bow press are –

Step-1: Place the Bow in the Bow Press Setup

Place your bow in the bow press carefully. And make sure that the two sides known as cam of the bow are set correctly on both terminals of the bow press.

Step-2: Record the Distance of String Knots Measurements

Check and keep a record of the distance from the knot of the string to cam. When you finish restringing, this record will help to be sure of the fact that your set up is ok and perfect.

Step-3: Turn the Wheel of the Bow Press

Now, pull the string in a little higher tension with one hand, and at a time, twist the wheel of the bow press with another hand. Keep turning until the string loosens and you can easily take out.

Step-4: Start Taking Off from One End

Now, start taking off the old string from the cam end. And while you are removing double-check and remember the area from where you take out the old string. Because precisely in the same position, you have to attach the new cable.

Step-5: Place the New String

Now when you have taken out one side of the string, place the loop of the new wire on the same position. Otherwise, it may happen like you take out the whole coil and while putting the new one, you misplace it. So, it’s better to take out and restring the new one at a time.

Step-6: Take Out from Other Cam

Remove the old string gradually but carefully and then take out from the other cam side also.

Step-7: Place the new string on other Cam

After removing the old rope from around the other wheel terminal, place the new one around the wheel correctly.

Step-8: Finish Placing by attaching the last string loop

Take out the entire old string. Bring the new wire between the middle hook, then stretching from the backside place, and ensure the previous loop end position.

Step-9: Attach the Bottom String

Now attach the small bottom string in the same way from the backside of the cam wheel. Take out the old one and place the new leash on the same loop

Step-10: Turn the Wheel of the Bow Press

Now turn the wheel of the bow press again, but this time to tighten the strings on its previous position.
After that, you will see the string changing is done so quickly and with less effort.

With a Portable Bow Press Tool

Method-2: With a Portable Bow Press Tool

Those who can’t afford to buy the table fixed bow press is the best choice for them. With this tool, restringing a compound bow seems a little messy for some, but you can do it without any restrictions by following these steps.

Step-1: Place the Brackets on the Both Sides

In this bow pressing kit, you will get two S-shaped brackets or clips. You have to attach the two ends of the bow press on the two-wheel cam with the help of these brackets.
The two sides of the brackets will be set on the two sides of each wheel.

Step-2: Twist the Key of the Bow Press

After you are done placing, turn the key of the bow pressing tool. Keep twisting until the string of the bow press sets in a tightening position.
In this position, measure the distance and keep a record for further check.

Step-3: Start Placing the new String

Now remove the old string loops and, at the same time, place the knot of the string in the same position.
Complete removing and placing the string knots one by one in the same way as shown in the steps of the method-1.
You have to be careful while placing the new string around the cam wheel. Don’t pull with much tight, and be sure you are not putting in the wrong place.

Step-4: Twist Bow Press Back Again

When you have completed stringing the new string, twist the bow press again, but this time in the opposite direction than the first.
It will now loosen the bow press and tighten the attached new string on its correct position.
In this way, you can comfortably restring the compound bow and carry on with your shooting or hunting with a bow.

Some Tips for You

  • While using the portable bow pressing tool, your bow may tilt and make you fall in a problematic situation. So, it will be better for you if you can set the bow in a stable position or take the help of others to hold the bow.
  • Check the length of the string and the middle height after restringing.
  • You can rub the new string with a good bow wax. It will make the leashes friction-free from each other and consequently last long.

Well, most of the archery experts recommend using a bow press, whether table fixed or the portable one.
But there is another method also to restring, and that is with your hand without any bow pressing tool. You can bend the two cam of the bow with your hand and change the string.
But that is a little confusing and needs a lot of measurements and considerations. It will be effective or not that depends on how your bow is.

But we suggest using any bow pressing tool suitable to you. By using a bow bending tool, you can change the string with the assurance of correct settings.

However, you can even learn more about the best compound bow before trying to rest.
